Mining & Civil (Mining) Engineering
Mining Engineers are responsible for managing the extraction and processing of valuable ores from the earth. They use their knowledge of mathematics, physical sciences, specialised mining software and economics to manage the mining operation, from exploration, through to feasibility, development, production and processing.
The University of Queensland (UQ) offers Queensland’s only
Bachelor of Engineering (Mining).
UQ also offers a minor in Mining Engineering which is available to undergraduate students within the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil). While this minor allows Graduate Civil Engineers to equip themselves with a deeper understanding of the minerals sector, it does not account for a full industry-recognised mining degree.
CQUniversity Australia (CQU) offers a range of Mining Engineering Associate Degrees and also offers some students the opportunity to start the Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) at CQU in central Queensland and complete the final two years in Brisbane studying at UQ. Visit the
CQUniversity Mining Hub.

The first time I walked onto a mine site I knew I was going to be a Mining Engineer. Apart from studying at uni, I spend my time with friends or playing sport. I have been lucky enough to get vac work every summer - I've worked in sand mining on Straddie, in underground coal in the Bowen Basin and in open-cut in the Surat. I'm a country girl at heart so I can't wait to get back to regional Queensland as a graduate.

I grew up in Townsville but moved to Brissy to study civil and construction engineering at QUT. I’m also studying a minor in mining at UQ, but it’s still worth the challenge of two different uni’s. I’ve been lucky to work in the mining industry every break since first year and I definitely want to end up on site when I graduate. This year I’m hoping to get some underground, blasting or metals experience, but as long as I’m on a mine site I’ll be happy. I love the friendliness of small mining towns and it's great to be able to brag about being a part of huge mining projects!

I grew up in Stanthorpe then moved to Brisbane to study a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining)/Bachelor of Business Management at UQ. I'm living on campus where I'm having the time of my life (you should hit up college if you can, good times!!). I am excited about a mining career and look forward to the many challenges particularly those regarding sustainability, that we as engineers are going to face.

I have just signed with BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance as a Graduate Mining Engineer. I grew up on the coast but moved to BrisVegas to study a Bachelor of Engineering (Mining) at UQ. The highlights of my uni days were winning one of the first QRC scholarships and being trained as an assistant shot-firer one summer (getting paid to blow stuff up, booyah!)
