Metallurgy & Chemical Engineering
Metallurgical Engineers or ‘Metallurgists’ deal with the treatment of naturally-occurring minerals and the recycling of materials to produce commercially valuable products such as mineral concentrates, inorganic chemicals and refined metals.
Chemical Engineers apply their high-level understanding of chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics to the production and management of functional products from raw materials.
The University of Queensland (UQ) offers Queensland’s only specialised Metallurgy degree as a
Bachelor of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering.
James Cook University (JCU) offers a
Bachelor of Chemical Engineering from which some minerals companies source Graduate Chemical Engineers as well as Graduate Metallurgists, depending on the individual graduate’s relevant study and experience.
UQ also offers a
Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) and a
Bachelor of Chemical and Materials Engineering.

I am studying chemical and metallurgical engineering at UQ and enjoy rugby, surfing and partying with friends. I believe as we move through the 21st century and face the challenges of peak oil, sustainable natural resources, nuclear power and water supply - engineers, particularly in the resources sector will become the cornerstones of many future industries. The job prospects will be unreal!

I am studying Chemical Engineering at UQ and its pretty great! I was born in Perth but have spent most of my life in Brisbane. I love to shop, spend time with my friends and listen to music. I can't wait to graduate and to travel the world with in my career.

I am a Churchie graduate but I grew up in the Queensland coal mining town of Moranbah which sparked my interest in the resources sector. Shortly after I started a Bachelor of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at UQ, I was awarded a QRC scholarship.

I was one of the very first QRC scholarship students. I studied a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) at James Cook Uni in Townsville and have signed with Peabody Energy as a graduate chemical/metallurgical engineer. I'll be working in the Surat Basin to begin with...
